Non-Stop Service to Portland will Continue!

Media Release

August 28, 2008

In July 2008, the Governor's office created the formation of the Air Service Coalition to address the crisis that currently exists in the commercial airline industry. The purpose of the coalition is to:

  • Aggregate and organize available resources from Coalition members;
  • Offer incentives to a commercial airline with a minimum of 19-37-seat aircraft under a codeshare with a major air carrier for an initial year period; and
  • Develop a long-term strategy (2-5 years) for connected (via codeshare) corrunercial air service to commercial-rated airports within Oregon.

With the leadership of Governor Ted Kulongoski, and dialogue with our U.S. Representative Greg Walden, U.S. Senator Gordon Smith, U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, members of the Air Service Coalition created the framework for developing discussion for continued air passengers to smaller communities in the State of Oregon. ”The Governor, local communities, and airports have done a great job of preserving this vital air service,” Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) said. ”This route is a critical lifeline for the economy of the region.”

”I commend SkyWest for providing a vital lifeline for rural Oregon corrununities,” said Gordon Smith, U.S. Senator. ”Restoring reliable and accessible flight service will ensure that the Klamath Basin and South Coast are linked by air travel to the rest of the world.”

The Klamath Basin is excited that a vital link to Portland International Airport will be continued, stated Derek Martin, Airport Director. ”The outpouring of support that we received from the community to ensure that service to P0l1land continued was simply outstanding and once again proved to me what an amazing community Klamath Falls is.” said Mayor Todd Kellstrom,
